HISTORY OF TRIPURA

It is difficult to find out any record source about the origin name of the land Tripura. According to Kailash Chandra Sinha, a chronicler of the Tripura Rajas Tripura is a corrupt form of Tripuri dialect ‘Tui’ meaning water and ‘Pra’ meaning near, “Land adjoining to waters”.

The Kingdom of Tripura in its peak spread from the Sundarbans in the west and from Kamrup in the north to Burma in the south and the east during the 14th and 15th centuries AD. The Tripura Rajas are said to have assumed the title ‘Manikya’ from the time of Ratna Pha (Fa means father in Tripuri dialect). The kingdom of Tripura existed till 1949. After that the kingdom was merged with India.
