The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, A UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a Narrow Gauge railway that runs between New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling and the pride of Darjeeling. Built between 1879 and 1881, it is about 88 km long. The journey by this iconic train offers breathtaking views of the mountains of the Eastern Himalaya, valleys, forests, tea gardens and local villages on the way. Known as one of the prime engineering marvels, the toy train climbs from about 100 m above sea level at New Jalpaiguri to about 2,200 m (7,218 ft) at Ghoom, India’s highest railway station using six zig zags and five loops to gain altitude. With daily tourist trains between Darjeeling and Ghoom and the steam-hauled Red Panda service between Darjeeling and Kurseong, it still holds the distinction of the most desired and famous tourist activity in Darjeeling.
